As we are seeing movements of people across national and cultural borders, it is only natural that the importance of culture is considered in an individual’s mental health. In this age of globalization, I have had patients with various cultural backgrounds, and I have found that their unique and personal stories have been shaped by their culture.

Culture plays a role in mental health and mental illness, as our culture can contribute to our beliefs, values, lifestyle, communities, food, gender norms, and behavior patterns. Therefore, it is vital that culture be considered when considering holistic treatment that has the ultimate goal of helping a patient thrive and feel accepted and supported.

Cultural psychiatry is an emerging area in mental health in which I have studied and conducted research. In 2018, I presented research about Indian-American mental health at an international psychiatry conference in New York City, NY. At that time, my research was the only piece of literature on Indian-American mental health in existence.

Through my clinical work, research, and my own studying,  I have learned that a patient’s cultural identity emerges and develops throughout the individual’s life and social context. For example, cultural transitions such as migrating and relocation can be difficult, overwhelming, affect our identity and our mental health, which ultimately require discussion, treatment, and adaptation.

To me, a cultural assessment should be a component of every complete psychiatric assessment. I consider myself a culturally sensitive psychiatrist who is interested in learning more about your culture and how it shapes your values, your perceptions, and ultimately your life.

As your psychiatrist, it is imperative that I understand the importance of culture in your life, and in some cases helping you find alternative ways of cultural expression, that fit how you express yourself. It is one of the skills and competencies that I have as your psychiatrist to help you lead a meaningful and productive life.
